The start of the year always feels like a purification ritual for all the sins done in the previous year , if I say so. New Year resolutions range from I will try harder , will reach office on time , get a better job or even write better code coming in all shapes and sizes depending on who you are only to fizzle out in few weeks or sometimes in few days like to quit smoking .As Mark Twain has aptly remarked and I quote " Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual."
The concept of New year resolution dates back to ancient Babylonians, whose most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.Times have changed and i wonder whether my new year resolution is to return my bike loan.
This resolution day is celebrated all over the word and can be safely said has become equivalent to bathing in holy ganges , of course we are accepting our mistakes and vow to not to do them in the future .
Frankly New Year resolution are not all that a bad thing at least we are showing our intent , in fact its the thought that counts and few of the gritty ones succeed also.
Here is my list of Top 5 New Year resolution's which we all can follow
- I will become a responsible and law abiding citizen.
- I will put in a few hours of volunteer work every month if not every week.
- I will loose weight
- I will not watch cricket match.
- I will become a better cook ,this one is specially for those who eat the food which I cook.
Yes in this is a difficult time of the year with feeling of guilt and lip service all over the place , i am reminded of Abba's song ,"Happy New Year "
"Seems to me now
That the dreams we had before
Are all dead, nothing more
Than confetti on the floor
It's the end of a decade"
still hope is there
"May we all have our hopes, our will to try
If we don't we might as well lay down and die
You and I"
As for mine new year resolution I will say "Never tell your resolution beforehand, or it's twice as onerous a duty"
And for my friends who have already kept there new year resolutions , I will quote
"For all the resolution makers
who hope to start anew;
Think wisely of what you resolve
and its benefit to you.
Be careful of its labor,
and the burden of its time;
And heed my words…try as I could…
I’ve always broken mine"
Happy 2007.
